Length of merge fields in Word XP and 97

We have found problems with case management when using Word XP and Word 97 with respect to the length of merged fields that these products support. XP has a maximum length of 38 characters. As such you cannot mix and match versions of word on the same procedure charts. Otherwise you may get errors in the data source, is there anything we can do about this.
