lexmark printer 1100 compatible with hp

is my old lexmark 1100 color jetprinter compatible with my new HP pavilion f50 computer and
why does it say the printer is installed (i have the disc),then makes a grinding sound, but will not print a test page?

I assume that the HP f50 is running Windows XP.

If so, download the XP driver from Lexmark's web site.

Even if the HP does not have XP, there may be a newer driver posted on Lexmark's web page for your operating system.

Also, check that the printer port is set to the correct mode (usually ECP/EPP) for the printer.
(This setting is usually in BIOS settup.)

Sounds like your print head might not be in the proper position for printing (most grinding sounds are a result of the print head trying to move with the belt/gears, but not able to move because it is not in the proper position.

Make sure that you have ink in the cartridges and that the lack of ink is not demanding attention before you do anything more (most printers will place the printhead in the middle of the printer when it wants ink).
