Lifespan of business class printers

So I've recently taken over the Help Desk role at a small-mid level business.

Here we have a number of printers somewhere in between such as an HP 3700 is our newest one and printers like an HP LaserJet 5000, 4500 and other variations.

It seems like some of these printers are ageing and are experiencing frequent paper jams. On printer I printed the stats out on indicated at over 250,000 (Yes a quater million) pages had been printed on it.

So I guess my question is when it comes to pages printed, what's a good lifespan of laser printer like this? Woudl it be equatable to a car where 250,000 miles would be more than expected, or seriously pushing it.

Or is it more like jsut getting started? Somewhere in between?

Desktop printers are pretty cheap and eaily replaceable. Some fo the larger copy/printer centers I've found are just 2-3 year leases.

Any recomendaions on researching price/durability and other important features in business class laser printers such as the ones above?

frquient paper jams can often be stoped by the simple process of cleaning the paper dust from the printer.. though it's a bit more complex than just blasting compressed air through to **** it out.

you have to remove almost everything and wipe with clean soft cloth to remove it all.

with regular maintenance, printers can and will last into the billions of pages printed.

it's when you have to start replacing more than ink / toner / paper that you have to start looking at replacing the printer.

As Jacqui said printers with the proper maintains can last a very long time.

But they are generally replaced long before their useful life has been reached because of Tax Reasons. Any bit of Plant is depreciated by a certain amount per year so after a set period of time they actually start costing the company money to have in use. Currently here the Depreciation rate is 20% per annum but it may be different where you are. Currently any bit of plant has a life expectancy of between 4 -5 years before they no longer are of any benefit for deduction purposes to a company so they get replaced at this time.

It is really a question that you should be taking up with the accounts department if you have one or get advice from your companies accountant as to what the useful life expediency actually is for Tax purposes. You want to replace any piece of equipment used in the running of the business before it starts costing the company money in lost Tax Benefits so you really need to look at the business and the Local Laws governing Tax Depreciation Rates in your area. Once the hardware gets beyond a certain life it starts actually costing far more to have in place than what it is actually worth even though it most likely is performing flawlessly. I've seen everything from a Canon BJ 200 to one of the big Canon Net-workable Photocopiers being pushed out the door after 4 years as they are no longer of any benefit to the company and are really costing them money.

Now with a $100.00 AU BJ printer it isn't much of an issue but with a $250,000.00 AU Photocopier that has been regularly serviced and with only a million or so copies run off on it it may seem like a waste as the unit is in perfect working condition but I've had it shown to me that it was far more expensive to keep the $250,000.00 Photocopier than to replace it as the only Tax Deductions where the consumables and the cost of the service as 20% of a few K is nothing where as 20% of 250K is a lot of money that is kept by the business and not given to the Tax Man.

I don't believe you can put a generic number on prints before chuckung out the printer.
What you will need to look at first is the proposed monthly dutycycle by the manufacturer.
This is a number you shouldn't exceed.

Other than that, it is a question of maintenance costs (supplies and physical maintenance) and price per page.

My experience is however, that the general lifecycle of a laserprinter should not be taken beyond 3-4 years.
After this, the performance of the printers tends to decrease both in print quality as well as in energy consumption.

In a situation as your own, I would tend to opt for a leasing + servicing solution.
It may seem more costly when you first look at it but when you calculate the amount of time you can spend on fixing a printer and that you have no guarantees beyond the standard warranty (and even then...)
Also, supplies (except for paper) are inclusive of the leasing price.

General advantages then are :

- No timewasting on fixing printer issues
- Easy to calculate total cost per page
- These printer tend to come with counters, so you can pass on exact percentage of cost to correct departments if printer is shared...
- No running after supplies
- Printer broken -> replaced at no extra cost
- Some accounting depts prefer this solution financially

It all depends on the way you take care of that unit.

According to HP the Laserjet 5000 is good for up to 65,000 pages per month. Their warranty is 12 months.

So HP thinks that printer is good for 780,000 pages?

If you drop it a printer into an area and just feed it toner and paper it's mtbf (mean time before failure) is not gonna measure up to a machine that gets a quick brushing by the department when the toner is changed, and a visit by a service tech at a print count interval.

And don't let that piliger from the commercial near it with that battle ax. Although I have wanted to do it to a few I have worked on.
