A) Maximum Percent Of Volume Used By directory= 13 %
B) Maximum Subdirectory Tree Depth=25 CHARACTERS
C) NO MORE THAN 512.000 ENTRIES IN THE ROOT DIRECTORY
D) MAXIMUN DIRECTORIES ENTRIES: USE FILER.EXE, SELECT A DIRECTORY, THEN VOLUME INFORMATION THEN STATICS
E)USE VOLINFO.EXE TO SEE THE ENTIES AVAILABLES

PERFORMANCE.
1.- MANY FILES IN A DIRECTORY WILL SLOW PERFORMANCE, TO AVOID THIS USE THE FULL FILE NAME INCLUDDING THE EXTENSION EG: EDIT.COM G:\PATH\FILE1.TXT
SOLUTION: EXPAND THE TREE

2.- LONG PATH AND FILE NAMES WILL HOG YOUR SERVER MEMORY. WHY? BECAUSE WHEN YOU MOUNT A VOLUME, THE FULL "FAT" IS LOADED INTO MEMORY AND THE USED FILES INTO CACHE. IS NOT THE SAME TO HAVE "FILE1.TXT" AND "FILE2.TXT" LOADED INTO CACHE THAN "THIS IS THE FILE THAT I NAMED FILE1.TXT"

3.- BE SURE THAT YOUR APPS "CAN WORK EFFICIENTLY WITH LONG NAMES" IF NOT THERE WILL BE AN ADDITIONAL TASK "LONG NAMES TO 8" CHAR CONVERSION.

If you are really concerned about this, you might want to look at Novell Storage Services (NSS). Mounts large volumes in seconds, has file name support for Unix, DOS, Mac and has the capability of handling 2,000,000 plus files and directories.

Also be careful of directories that have lots of files in them. Once you start seeing 32,000 files in a directory, the server will start having performance problems.
