Limited to no connectiivty issue..almost at wits end.

I have googled, gone into chat rooms where i thought I would ifnd a techie, and tried many things and still get the error message limited to no connectivity. Let me explain the whole thing.

I was trying to fix a PC that oculd nto get internet access. Both my PC and the one Im trying to fix are running XP PRO SP2. I was gettign it just fine. I put a couple spare NICs in the other PC to see if they worked and they didn’t. i put one of those in mne however and it worked. I then tried put the other PC’s NIC in my PC to confirm whether or not it was faulty . Although i tired a couple other spare NICs it seems that after putting the other NIc in which is a 3com 3c905c etherlink 10/100 PCI even my onboard 3com 3c920 integrated fast ethernet controller will nto work nor will any other card i put in an avialable PCI slot.

I’ve downlaoded and run Winsockxpfix.exe; I have run ipconfig/renew ad release; I have flush andregistered the DNS with the netsh command; I have reset the catalog; I have done everyting I can think of and have searched out and still can not conect. the only other thing I know to do is to format my hard drive (whichis what i want to avoid) and hope that works. Now the same problem Im supposed to be fixing for someone else I am now having an ddont have a solutoin except the “Hail Mary ” (formatting). (and i know it’s not an ISP or modem problem cuz Im using a laptop right now on that very connection. Is there ANYTHIGN ELSE i can do?
