Limiting User Space on an NT Server

    Locked

    by mary.kissiday ·

Is there any way to limit the disk space used by an account on an NT Serve? I am in the process of moving from administering Netware to NT 4 and have not been able to find anything like the volume space limiting available with Netware. Does it exist easily in NT or is there a way to do it?

Windows 2000 allows you to do that.
If you run into a utility that will do that, compare the price and see if would worth to just upgrade the OS. There are many enhancements in W2K that you could make use of it, aside from just limiting volume space for the users.

      Good Luck!

Hi, win2K does have enhancements as noted, however, you’d have to consider costs of upgrade (software and possibly hardware) and training. For nt4 you have a couple of things you can do and monitor. You can set up user policies (policy editor under admin. tools)-this can be done for individuals and groups. To look at it, open Policy editor, click on default user, check limit profile size and fill in settings below. Also, in nt resource kit is diruse.exe which monitors disk spaced used per folder (e.g., users’ home folders). You can specify a max. size and diruse.exe will warn users when they exceed the limit and send you an alert. Check information at technet at http://www.microsoft.com. Good luck.

Unfortunatly, NT4 was surprisingly shipped without Disk Quota Management software. Although you could go the Win2k option to supply the said tools, you can opt for a third party Qutoa Management tool such as “Spaceguard” or “Quota Manager”. The
third party software also gives the added advantage of directory level management whereas Win2k only gives Disk Level.

Glad to be of help, if any.
