Link to Sybase from SQL

By henry.a.penaranda ·
I am going through **** connecting to a Sybase table through SQL.

First of all, can this be done? It doesn't seem like it.

I need help to specify what exactly needs to be inputted into the wizard, ie:provider string, provider name, etc.

You'll have to use the Sybase ODBC provider as your data source, as I can't find an OLEDB provider specific to Sybase.

Once you've set up the ODBC DSN, use MSDASQL as the provider and your Sybase server name as 'servername'. The ODBC driver should provide the rest.

First of all we need to understand that Sybase (although very similar to SQL Server) is a different at TDS (tabular data stream) level. You need an ODBC client (such as merant or sombrero or openlink). Then you also need to find out on what port number is your Sybase running. The default is 5000, i.e. if your sybase server name is SybaseServer then in the connection string you would have to specify "SybaseServer,5000". Don't worry, the comma thing works! Rest of the details would be same (i.e. login and pwd) and you may have to specify the winsock (protocol being TCP/IP). If you need more help, please feel free to contact.
