Links don't work

By brifd1 ·
Fairly regularly, about 75% of the time, when I double click on links, nothing happens. What could be possibly doing this?

I've run multiple spyware programs, anti-virus, updated all before doing, and tried Windows Update...except I got a blank screen for the latter.

Ideas? I'm running XP Professional. Thanks!

Try an IE repair first.

You can try to repair Internet Explorer, by going to START>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS just click the Microsoft Internet Explorer Remove button and you will be given the option to repair IE.

You may also want to make sure you have the latest Java Script files installed, for these you can go to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp you will see a green box on th etop right that says FREE DOWNLOAD, click this to install Sun's Java script, this used to be installed by MS as JVM but they have handed the reins over to Sun who developed it.

If all this fails, Click START>RUN and type cmd in the box, hit enter. Then type 'sfc.exe /scannow' (without the quotes) to run the system file checker,
it will replace any damaged or missing system files.

If ALL this fails, you always have the System Restor efeature, if it USED to work just roll back to a known working date.

Hi

You should also run some diagnostics on the OS. These will check registry entries point to the correct locations, and also check that your links are valid among many other checks. Often these programs will repair any broken links by searching for the correct path.

Have you moved any data between folders/drives? This will cause links to break.

Good luck

When you say links don't work do you mean shortcuts/links to programs or internet links?

Cheers.

One thing that makes me curl up is when I hear someone tell me they have used multiple spyware programs etc, as most spyware removers contain spyware themselves.

I would run the above app as this has been the foundation for my spyware repair processes..

Be careful in what you remove as there could be valid info that you need..

good luck..

Good point. I truly wonder about spyware programs, as they each tend to "find" something different than the other ones do. And, Spybot Search & Destroy, which many places recommend, always "finds" the same "spies." My other similar pet peeve are Internet cache (and other stuff) "eraser" programs, although at least some of what the program says is "erased" can be verified.
