I have a Linksys BEFSR81 router installed on a Windows NT 4.0 network. The PC I use has Windows 2000 Professional installed. I am trying to accomplish 2 things:
1. I need to get Netmeeting to work so that I can see and hear the other person and they can see and hear me.
2. I need to get multiplayer games such as Quake to work so that others outside of my network can connect to a server I start and vice-versa.
Here’s what I have done to try and fix the situation:
a. Opened all ports on the router from 0 to 65535 relating to the PC’s IP#. All PC’s have static IP numbers assigned.
b. Enabled the PC in question (game server) to be in the DMZ of the router.
c. Upgraded the firmware to the latest update.
d. Updated all games to their latest patches/updates.
No matter what I try on the router as its instructions state, I cannot get video or sound to pass through the router to the other person. At times, I can see and hear the other person, but it is not consistent.
When playing multiplayer games, other PC’s on my internal network can see and attach to the server I host, but those on the outside cannot see or attach to my game server. On the other side of the coin, when I attempt to attach to my partners server on the Internet, once I connect to it and another PC on my internal network attempts to attach to the game, it kicks me out of the game. All PC’s have the same version of the game installed. (Quake ][ v3.20)
I know what your going to say: Who has time to play games? My son is requesting that I make this work, and I would like to do what I can to comply. At one time, before I installed this router, I had Proxy Server 2.0 installed on another PC acting as the gateway to the Internet. When I had this online, I did not have these problems.
