Linksys Router

By mablair88 ·
Has anyone gotten the BEFW11S4 Ver. 2 Linksys router to work with MSN Messenger 6? I can establish a web cam connection without a problem but not a voice connection. Thanks!

It is likely due to the built in firewall software. You can try putting you computer's IP into DMZ mode on the router. This will open up all of the network ports. You may also have to setup IP / Port forwarding, so it makes it as if your computer was connected directly to the internet (and not going through a router).

Hi,

Most likely you have to open the ports: 1720,139 and 1002 on the firewall.
The best bet is to check with the FAQ or helpdesk of Linksys on how to enable that for you applications.

This Technet article will tell you the ports you need to open (TCP & UDP both) for file transfer, audio and video to work properly in MSN Messenger6.

Thank you for your comments. I have tried all configurations suggested and still come up with the same scenario. It would appear I will have to wait for Linksys to upgrade the firmware for that router.

You need the latest firmware from linksys fir that. I had similar problems. It wasn't due to ports, but the firmware. Opening the correct ports didn't work for me either. Install the latest firmware (1.45, or 1.45.1) and you will have an additional function - universal plug and play - available. Enable this and all should be ok. No idea why this is relevent for MSN Messenger, but it seems to be!

The linksys router will automatically open the correct ports for you when required.
