Linksys router Java problems

By Choppit ·
My Linksys wireless cable router (BEFW11S4 V.2) causes IE to error with web pages that contain Java applets. I know that this is an issue for some NAT firewalls. Is there a way to solve this without putting host into DMZ or opening large ranges of ports?

I have a Linksys cable router too, just not wireless, and I have never had any problems with Java applets. Nor have I had to open up ports or set DMZ. I run multiple systems of Win2k, Win98, Win95, and Unix. None have the java applet problem via the linksys cable router.

I would suspect that either there is a problem with your configuration of the cable router, a firmware revision level problem, or a physical problem with the cable router. You should start out by first connecting the PC directly to the cable modem to rule out any problems with the PC and software. Then check the Linksys site for an upgrade to the firmware level. Also check your configuration of the router.

This is a stumper then, because the java code is simple data to the router. From your comments it sounds like HTML, JPG, MPG, and other data types are being received with no problems. Also I am assuming that all Java applets are not functioning and not just from a certain site.
Hopefully someone else may have some additional inputs for a solution.

Some more info: Prior to the Linksys I used a Belkin model which did not exhibit the java problem but was unstable. Prior to the Belkin I used W2K server NAT and Routing Services which did not have this problem.(I also found this setup to be unreliable although not as bad as the Belkin) The 4 clients have remained consistent throughout.(1 x XP Home, 2 x Win 2K, 1 x W98.

Router firmware is at the latest published version. Static addressing is in use. And otherwise the routers performance is excellent.

I have now resolved the problem. Thanks for your input. In case you're interested, I cured the problem by enabling MTU on the router and setting at 1382. (I just need to see if there are any side effects!)
