When I try to get Suse 8.2 to connect it doesn’t. The log shows this message:
SuSE Meta pppd (smppd-ifcfg) , Version 1.00 on linux.
    We are disconnected.
    trying to connect to smpppd
    connect to smpppd
    We are disconnected.
    Interface is eth0.
    We are connecting.
    pppd: plugin pppoatm.so loaded
    pppd: PPPoATM plugin_init
    pppd: plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd: PPPoATM setdevname – remove unwanted options
    pppd: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm – success: 0.38
pppd: connect (0.38): no such device
    We are disconnected.
pppd died: fatal pppd error (exit code 1)

I have no idea what any of this means except it does not connect. Many thanks for any help.
    Pete

try open a konsole and login or SU
      to root
as being root do the smpppd

and maybe if this is not working then try start the pppd as root to. it could be a permitting problem you might change the permissions on the smpppd and the pppd to 0755
