I am a Linux newbie, who is interested in building a working knowledge of Linux and potentially use it as a livelihood. But for starts, my goal is to learn at home. Last night I installed RedHat Fedora 9 on my desktop. I am interesting in building an application home server which will allow me to configure to turn on/off my lights, stereo, TV and check my voice mail and send me a email message to my Palm Treo whenever I get a voice mail on my home number. Do you know of any web addresses/companies that give instruction on how I can fulfill this goal. Thanks!a

on what hardware you are going to use for the control, parallel port, serial port, USB?

Google for how to control serial port on linux or some such. access voice mail from PC, send an email to my palm.

Got to say Fedora is not the first choice distro for a linux newbie. SimplyMepis, Mandriva, PCLinux, might have been a better way to go.

Fedora is more of an OS experimenter's distro than an application one.
