The Linux Documentation Project has The Linux System Administrator's Guide at

Red Hat Linux System Administration Primer is available from

You may want to start with the Linux Newbie Administrator Guide at

It is good to know what is "under the hood", in other words, the command line interface, vi editor and where the configuration files reside, but most distributions can be administered through a GUI interface, if you decide to install the graphical interface.

If you run a server and do not need the graphical interface later on, you can always install webmin from It runs as a service and allows you to administer your server from a browser.
