Linux and Wireless Lan WEP

By Beighley ·
I have been using Linux Redhat for about a year, and feel that I know my way around this OS pretty well...however, I continue to struggle with connecting to a wireless lan with WEP. I can connect to non-encrypted wireless access points without a problem, but not access points running WEP.

I am currently using RH8 with a Netgear MA401 wireless PCMCIA card and am looking for specific instructions on how to configure my card to access a wireless lan running WEP. I have already downloaded the Linux Wireless Tools, have read through page after page of documentation, and have looked at dozens of websites on the subject, all without success.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thank You...

Are you using wlan-ng or iwconfig?

With iwconfig you should just be able to do iwconfig ethX key MYKEY

Make sure you enter the key according to this:

"To set the current encryption key, just enter the key in hex digits as XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX or XXXXXXXX." (from iwconfig manpage)

and not XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

If you have restricted ESSID broadcasting, you'll also need to type "iwconfig essid <name of ap>".

Make sure you then take the interface up and down using "ifdown <device> && ifup <device>".
