Hi
I posted a question some time ago there which focused on windows SA and windows open source alternatives : https://www.techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=303213&start=0
Thanks to all involved.
However, after doing some research I’ve looked at the different options we have and it looks like we will be migrating all of our workstations to an ubuntu, open office and evolution mix. There even seems to be ways to integrate the ubuntu logins to our existing AD (as our 2003 server would stay in place for our ordering app).
Exchange is still a big sore point though. I’ve accepted the fact that I’m going to need to install another linux server for e-mails. However opinions seem to differ wildly depending on where I look on the viability of open source exchange alternatives.
I’m currently looking at 2 alternatives : opengroupware and openxchange.
Our current exchange usage scenario is this :
– 16 mailboxes with central backup
– about 11 users have laptops and need to be able to have remote access to the mail server along with cached offline for when internet is not available (in outlook/exchange – we use the built in http OWA integration into outlook to make this possible)
– calendaring (not shared)
– tasks (not shared)
– contacts (not shared)
– vacation messages
– AD integration (not a must but a good advantage)
It’s a very simple setup so not all of the bells and whistles of exchange are even used as is. However, remote access is a must. I haven’t looked at the capabilities of evolution for this yet but it would be our program of choice for this purpose and I assume this is more a server-side feature than a client one.
So, again, I’d need feedback on exchange alternatives, but linux-based this time around.
Has anybody had any luck with the software I’m suggesting ? Any other suggestions based on our usage scenario ?
Basically, we need a central mail system with remote client access everything else is bells and whistles.
