    Linux Install

    Locked

    OK… I am new to Linux. I am installing Red Hat 6.1 on an Gateway 2000, Pentium 166 with 32 mb RAM. I have gotten to the point where applications are installing, and it has just stopped at the install of ispell-3.1.20-22. It’s only a 6mb App and I have about 275mb free yet on that partition. What should I do??? I’m thinking of rebooting because it hasn’t moved in about 35 minutes. HELP! (OH yeah, I’m doing a GUI install instead of text mode prompt.)

      Uh… I think I would re-boot. The essential part of Linux should be installed already and you can re-start the applications part.

      Hi Mike,
      I just installed linux on three of 4 machines for our Linux Club @ college and while new to the os myself here’s what I would do (it sounds like a out of disk space/partion error)
      1)put the boot diskette (3.5)back in as well as the cd-romand reboot.
      2)choose Gnome Workstation install.
      3)when you get to the partion mount point prompt, do the following;
      A)choose mount point “swap” and size = 32mb
      B)choose mount point “/” and “Linux native” and don’t forget to select the “grow to fill disk” option.
      This is the simplest way to set up your first linux install. (period)*
      * unless you are planning to dual boot in which case after A)swap and before b)”/”.
      enter “/boot” and size = 16mb
      Keep in mind if you want to do a full install with most of the goodies you should have a minimum of a gig disk space available and more is better.
      other than that if your sort on disk space hit the back button and unselect as many uneeded packages as possible (especially if you chose “custom” and “all”
      Hope th

        Thanks! Actually, I re-booted, went through the install in Text-Mode, went for the GNOME install like I originally did, and it went through fine. I think I am still having issues with setting up my monitor since it is not on the list. Also, I had setup the \boot, \, and \swap partitions correctly, but on the seconds install those were the ONLY partitions I created. I’m gonna mess around with it and do a few more installs this week, as well as install Mandrake Linux at home. FUN FUN FUN… Thanks for the info.
