Linux Login/SQL server in small workgrou

by timmitchell . Updated 24 years, 5 months ago

I have a Linux Redhat 7.1 box that I need to use as a logon/file server in my 15-user network (we currently have no logon or file servers). I’m hoping to create (or simulate) a Windows-type domain that will allow me to set user-level and group-level security. I have configured Samba as best I know how, but I can never connect to it from my Windows machine, nor can I ping it by hostname (I can ping by IP). The Linux machine receives a DHCP address from my Linksys DSL router, as do the Windowsclients, and it can connect to the internet; I just can’t get it configured to play nice with Windows.

Other than configuring smb.conf and setting up a dedicated directory to be shared with Windows clients, what other things can I check? Does anyone have a server running in a similar environment that could give me some guidelines on what my smb.conf file should look like?

Thanx….
