Linux or XP webhost…

by scaryjobob . Updated 20 years, 2 months ago

Hey y’all, I’m a long time listener first time caller…

I’m probably going to jump into too many questions at once with this, but here it goes:

I’m getting ready to set up my own webhost at home and am having a hard time deciding whether I want to use windows xp or ubuntu linux “breezy badger”. I’ve already used IIS in windows xp and know my way around it fairly well, or at least enough to be a danger to myself :P. I know how to set up a webpage and ftp in iis, but i also want to host an irc and a shoutcast station on it. i also want to be able to remotely admin it easily, as i dont really want to leave all the peripherals attached to it after set up.

the question i have is what programs should i be looking into to do this with?
what’s the linux equivalent of iis?
what’s a good .com registrar that supports freedns?
linux or xp?

I’m prepared to do a lot of research, this server is going to be my practice box for as much experience as i can squeeze out of it, any pointers towards good resources are welcome.
