linux shared files to xp

hi to all, first im very very newbie to linux so i really dont have an idea regarding the communication of files from linux to windows., recently we encounter a problem here on our company regarding linux files sharing., everytime we access shared folder from linux all we can see is "local disk " with unknown icon. i wonder what happens since the other day we can actually see those files and folders., hope someone can send me some answer or script or something since i really dont have knowledge in linux scripting., our system admin is on leave for about 2 days i we cannot reach him so please help., thanks so much in advance..

you have, but what you describe sounds like the Samba server may not be active on the local system, or the connection or the sharing settings for the file server may be not quite right.

Make sure the Samba services are running on the Linux server as it is the Samba protocol that talks with windows. If that isn't running you'll get nowhere.

make sure the firewall on the linux server is letting samba connections through.

and that the router is set to publish the samba server ip as a wins ip.

both of those can cause issues if not set right.
