Little white boxes on Desktop Icons

By awx ·
I have these white check boxes on my desktop icons in the upper right corner of them only when I select the icon. I have run all kinds of virus scans and they still remain. Any ideas would be appreciated.

What OS and which version is this?

Something you can try, though. Directions defaulting to windows XP.

Delete the shell icon cache. The file is iconcache.db. You can find it at
C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Local Settings\Application Data
Reboot after deleting the file.

Sure, it doesn't matter which version,

excepting where you'll find the file, and what it is named.

For starters, Vista and 7 don't have /Documents and Settings, the have a /Users directory.

Let me have a look for the appropriate path.

You may need to set your Folder Options to Show Hidden Files.
If you don't want to bother doing that temporarily, you can rebuild the shell icon cache from a command prompt.
