Loading Drivers on W95/98

By techdale ·
Could someone please tell me the best way to load drivers on to systems running W95 or 98 1st edition. When trying to load a driver for a networking fast ethernet card on W98 1st edition, it does not recognise the driver on the disc and when I hop back out of it and re-boot, it says it is missing VXD files and later says it can't find the library link or something of the like. Basically at present I just go into device manager and look at the properties for the card and tell it to update the drivers and tell it to go to the A: but when it finds it, it can't load it and says that the driver could not be loaded. It sometimes asks for the operating disc and once loaded, stops half way through. This must be a problem with the earlier operatingsystems as I don't have a problem with W98se and upwards.
Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

Hi

When you insert the disk, you should tell the update driver wizard that you have the disk, and then browse to the folder that contains your driver files (*.inf). Sometimes, if you just insert the disk Windows will only search the root directory and not the sub-directories.

Hope this helps

Thank you, but I browsed before and addressed it to the sub-directory but it still doesn't like it. Also , can you tell me how to stop the VXD file missing error appearing now on start up.

Ok, what you need to do is remove the card from your computer by going into the device manager and selecting the card. Then click the remove button. You will then need to restart you PC. When your PC starts it will find the card. Stick your diskinto the floppy drive and locate the driver (*.inf). Also note the name of the network card it finds and write it down. Maybe your disk is bad and you can get the driver off of the internet. After loading the driver go back into the device manager and look at the card an make sure there is no conflicts(yellow exclamation point). Good Luck!

The reason you are getting the missing VXD file is because when you tried to install the card before some of the appropriate files did not get loaded. When you remove the card from the device manager and reboot this error should go away. However, if it doesn't go into your network neighborhood and remove the components and this will definetly take care of it.

Hi

Regarding your missing .VXD error on startup. This is caused by a file that is referenced in the registry not being in the location specified. To fix this you should backup your registry, then search the registry for the file named in the error message. Once the entry has been found you can delete it. This will stop the error message from appearing.

It is also possible that the file referenced may be corrupt. If so, search the registry for the file, note the path to the file quoted in the value, determine which application requires it, then uninstall and reinstall the application to create a new uncorrupted copy of the file required.

Hope this helps
