Loading PBR 2 ... done. A disk read error occurred.

By hank.cope ·
My Dell6000 is having hd probs - I get "loading PBR 2 ... done. A disk read error occurred. I understand that this is the XP partition. My hope was that I would be able to boot from a cd, w/ 1st priority to get to my data, 2nd would be to attempt to fix the mbr or pbr. After 3 attempts, I was able to make a bootable XP CD, boot from CD, get a message "inspecting your computers hardware configuration", then the screen goes black. I found reference that this is probably a hosed mbr, try zero-filling the 1st 2% with hd vendor utility. I'm getting deeper into this prob, and dont want to loose my data. Would the best way to proceed be to remove the hd and attach to another pc and attempt to get the data before going any further? If thats the right way to go, also would appreciate advice on how to go about that - the dead laptop is XP home, I have another Dell laptop w/ XP Pro, and a desktop with Windows 2000.
Other thoughts? Thanks.

My Dell 6000 overheated and I am getting the same messages. I beleive that I have hard drive issues, but I need to save some data.
