Loading Personal Settings takes ages

By simplepc ·
We have a small ~10 PC Network 3 newly install XP Pro machines when logging on to the SBS 2000 Domain Controller take approximately 2 minutes to load personal settings, yet when they just log on to the local machine it logs on rapidly (10 - 15 seconds) what is causing this? and how do I get around it

I would recommend you check your DNS settings, and also check the event viewer. I'll bet you'll get at least one USERENV error message in there.

go to www.eventid.net, search event, event parser. This will let you paste the actual event message and search for any solutions.

Are their profiles huge? If you're including the default size of the IE cache in what is copied of the profile onto the network, you'll have thousands of small files that have to go over the LAN...

if it is a roaming profile the users profile is stored on the server and every time they logon there profile is transfered from the server and when they logoff it is transfered to the server. if they are logging in with just a domain account but with their profile local it shouldn't take long at all. also you may want to change the path of the my documents folder on the machine, most users have about 100mb of data stored there and when you logon/logoff it had to be read/saved each time. change it to the c or elsewhere and you should see an improvement. at least this has been my experience.
