Loading SCSI 2 controller with Smart Sta

By jeneee ·
If I run the assisted Smart Start install on my ML350, it gets pretty far but eventually boots to a blue screen of death some time into the NT install. If I run the manual install, when I get to the part to specify mass storage, the only option I amallowed to install from the support disks is the 32-bit SCSI 2 controller for NT (which is what I think I should use). None of the other options will install at all. The documentation from the server however (if I'm reading it correctly) says that Ineed to install the 'Compaq Integrated Smart Array Controller' which is not even an option. The 32-bit driver APPEARS to install but when I go to the next screen it tells me no hard drives have been installed and installation will not continue. I have played with this in as many ways as I can think of but I obviously need the assistance of someone who performs installs on these servers regularly. Help!!

It sounds like you need to use the driver disk ( or CD ) from the manufacturer of your SCSI Controller. The "no drives installed" means that Smart Start doesn't have an appropriate driver ( the 32-Bit SCSI 2 is probably a best guess by the Smart Start ). Ans you must have at least one Contorller installed from the base setup before you can install the Integrated Array Controller.

I probably didn't explain myself very well. The server is a Compaq ML350. The drivers for this server come on the Support Disks I am prompted to make during the install. The only selection that will actually install is the 32-bit SCSI controller, which actually should be the right one. (As far as I can tell.) I used to build white-box servers so it would make sense that there should just be a driver disk for the controller but unfortunately I'm dealing with Compaq and they seem to like to make things a lot more complicated. I was hoping that someone out there might have some experince with Compaq installations. Thanks! jen

I use Smart Start all the time but have never encountered this problem. I suspect maybe you're doing something different preliminary to to the NT install. My process is to boot from the Smart Start CD (use version 4.8 for you ML350) and go straight to Array Configuration in Smart Start and configure my array as RAID5. After a reboot I install NT which sees the array as a single drive.

I don't actually have a RAID controller, it's an integrated SCSI controller so Array Configuration is not one of my options. I am acutally using version 4.9 (it shipped with the server), do you think I should try 4.8?

You will need to create support software with the smartstart CD. Put the smartstart cd in.When you are asked to select software. Select "compaq server support for Microsoft windows NT" You will need 4 diskettes. Let the software create the diskettes. When you are installing NT the first screen reads. "Setup is inspecting your......"
Press the F6 key. Then when you get into the setup it will automatically ask you for third party driver disk. Insert disk 2 of the four and that should give you the correct drivers. I usually only have to do this for Smart Array 4200

This is the answer I got from Compaq, it seems to be working!

'If you want to do a manual install - follow these guidelines:

In order to install NT on a system with a current Compaq Array controller, you need to create the 3 NT install disks from the NT CD. Use the "WINNT /OX" command to do this. Then, when the Smartstart manual install is done, boot from those disks - without the NT CD in the drive until asked. Choose "custom" for the install mode (F6 key) and skip detection on massstorage. Specify an unlisted controller and use the Compaq NT 4.0 SSD for the drivers (in this case, the "Integrated Array" driver). Then specify a secondary controller and use the NT "IDE/Atapi" driver. You can also use the SSD for the NIC drivers (also likely to be out of date in NT). '

I was trying to do the install from the CD.. I also didn't know the F6 trick.

Thanks for your help everyone!!!!!
