Local desktop on domain question

By brian ·
Greetings,

I wasn't sure where to post this question, since it involves a Linux server running Samba (NT Domain controller) and a Win98 workstation. So I'll start here.

When I log onto my NT Domain from my Win98 machine, it copies profile andpolicy info across the network. So far so good. My problem is that it also stores my destop in my Home directory on the server. Thats where the problem is. Often I will have a folder called Temp or something similar on my dest top with alot of data in it. Usually in the megabytes. This makes it quite time consuming to log in or log out, since my entire desktop is being copied across the LAN. I DO want to have profiles but would prefer to keep the desktops locally only. Is there a way todo that?

Thanks,
Brian

Your profile should not be copied everytime you log on, only if you it has changed since you last loged off, or if you log on from a different machine. Why would you keep large files on the desktop? If this is for easy access? just create a shortcutto a different folder. In NT User Manager for Domains, make sure that it doesn't have a path for for the profile for that user.

Hi,
I made some tests for you and the answer is YES.

If you can, implement a policy for your domain (or maybe you already have) using "poledit.exe".

In this policy you will have a Default Computer, Default User and you need add your Computer and your User Account.
Settings which must be applied.
1.Your Computer (double clik):
-Network\SystemPolicyUpdate\RemoteUpdate-enabled
-WindowsNTUserProfiles\ ChoseProfileDefaultOperation-Download
Don't mark "Delete chached copies of roaming profiles".
2.Your User Account (double clik):
-WindowsNTUserProfile\ ExcludeDirectoriesInRoamingProfile-enter Desktop.
3.Save this policy as "NTconfig.pol" in NETLOGON share on both PDC and BDC.
To avoid any mistake add Domain Administrator Account in this policy without any restriction (make your tests with other user account).
In this policy you will find many other usefully options but before apply to all users test with an test account.
Results:
Your profile will be saved on server and also on local machine but current Desktop will remain only on local machine (delete files from desktop in the profile which was saved on server).

These tests was made on a NT machine. I think that for Win9x you must save policy as "config.pol"
