Local Device Name Is Already In Use

By edwardselkov ·
I am running Vista Ultimate x86.

I had a HP Color Laser Jet CP1518ni installed directly onto my network.
All was running well. I had a power failure and although the pc haa a UPS the printer did not. After the AC returned I could no longer print. I uninstalled the HP driver/software & deleted the printer in the printer folder. Cleaned the registry and rebooted.

When reinstalling the printer the install software sees the printer and begins the installation. If I install it as a network printer I get the error message "LOCAL DEVICE NAME ALREADY IN USE" and the install aborts.

I can install it as usb and everything is fine.

So I reset all the printers defaults and even flashed the Firmware. It still will not install as a network printer.

HP says the issue is in my PC and as such they will not help.

Does anyone have any ideas?

If it is a network printer

Could you just use the existing port that has already been created instead of trying to create a new one.

Or try and change the IP address of the network printer and install it with its new IP Address.

Name is stored

Since the error says that the Name is in use it may be stored in your router or other network interface device. You would have to clear it there before it can be used, or give it a different name.

You should be installing the printer driver software WITHOUT the printer attached.
