Could we clarify which versio of netware? To my knowledge, there was never a version 4.6. There a 4.11, 4.2, 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0. There was a version of the Windows NT client version 4.6, but it would now be considered ancient, and definitely not compatible with WIndows XP. Current client software for XP/pro is ver 4.83 with SP1, downloadable from http://download.novell.com/filedist/PublicSearch

When installing the client, be sure to pick the protocol that matches what the server is using.

Which flavor of XP is being used? I'll resume XP/pro. If it is XP Home, I recommend upgrading to the pro version before trying to connect to a network.

Is the user's home directory being connected via a MAP ROOT command? This is a good place to start.

Does the lockup occur just browsing files in the directory, when a file is read or written?

When the user access his home directory, does the server lock up *hard*, meaning that there's no response to the keyboard or anything? I had this one and it turned out to be a failing IDE hard drive in the server.
