Locked up and cannot restart

By danlh ·
I have a Win98 machine acting as a server for 4 Win95 machines. The 95
machines have mapped drives to a shared data folder and a shared application on the 98 machine. The problem happens between the 98 machine and just one 95 machine.Sometimes theywill both lock up and the only way to restart is to unplug the machines. No Ctr-Alt-Delete and the power buttons will not work. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Locked up and cannot restart

Sounds like the shared application could be overloading the 98 machine. I would recommend using an NT Server or if costs don't allow that then Linux using Samba is a great choice as well. Although the Samba with Linux will take some time to setup correctly.

The shared data folders are probably fine, but I would recommend not sharing the application from the 98 machine. It's possibly the cause of the lockups.

I know that this may be obvious but did you hold in the power button for at least 10 seconds. It should shut the machine down. As to why. Are you using the same protocols and NIC's on all of the PC's? You could change the virtual memory settingson the 98/server PC to manual and create a larger Pagefile/swapfile. Also increase the RAM on the 98 machine to atleast 128 Meg. Make sure the shared Data folder is not on the same harddrive as the OS. Hope these help.
