Locked

locking the server

By NatCat ·
Hi guys,

Here is the situation, we have come in today and no one can log on to the network.
They are getting an insufficent memory message.
That alone makes no sense.
But on the PDC (NT 4.0) , the workstation has been locked and when I tried to login with the same name and password that worked on Friday, but that suddenly is no longer correct.

What I'm asking is
1. Is there a remote possibility that this wasn't a malicious attempt to stop work (grasping at straws I know).
2. Once I've solved the mystery of what happened. How do I fix it ?

btw: the pdc is a dell server

Sounds more like a virus that is replicating itself and using all of the resources available.

Can you override the PDC to unlock using the Admin password? Have you tried to turn off the system, unplug if need be and let it reboot? Not the best solution, but that should, at the very least, release the other workstations.

Do you have a BDC on the network that could take the load of login, once the main PDC is shut off? If it is a virus, maybe you got lucky and it hasn't propagated to the BDC yet. Try rebooting either system, PDC, BDC, or Workstation with a virus recovery disk and scan for a virus.

Sorry I'm not much more help, and you have probably already tried some if not all of these.

Roger

I've gone back to the machine and
1. It seems to have unlocked itself
2. I couldn't run any applications including the task manager until I shut down pcanywhere.
3. I'm getting alot of licensing errors in the log files but I haven't gone past my license limit
