Locking up when using modem in NT 4.0

By deniesel ·
I have installed a modem on my NT 4.0 workstation and am trying to use hyperterminal to access my PBX for our phone switch. Every time I end the session my cpu locks up and cant ctrl, alt, delete to get out. I tried using Procomm plus instead and got the same result while trying to contect. Any suggestions on why this is happening and what will fix it?

I've eeen this happen with software based modems in NT4.0
Try using a hardware modem.... External US robotics or something- NOT a plug -n-play winmodem.

Locking up when using modem in NT 4.0

NT4 is unusual compared to win9x and win2k even. To add a modem, one needs to first add the comm port as a system device under ports, and then install the modem software to bind it to the port.
Winmodems are especially difficult for NT because nothing is supposed to get full direct acess to hardware aand those modems need a pipeline to the cpu to function. Some are not compatible with NT at all ...

Please post more specific info about make/model and such and we can go further ...

Locking up when using modem in NT 4.0

Ok, one up/one down if this is accept able ... NT4 is NT4, and the rules may be bent or twisted sometimes, rarely broken.
In a search to the third level of links, ( thirty five minutes), I found nothing at http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/ ; jaton.com was not online ; and nowhere in many retail sites have I seen that NT4 supports this device.

Look to the retail box and/or the book that came with it, if not marked NT4 compatable specifically, then replace it with one that is. Manufacturers want to be able to use that logo, so if not there, it's for good reason. Now, win2k uses many winmodems, but that is overkill compared to the $45 solution.

** I trust that the pbx is analog or that you are using an approved signal filtering device in the line; that any and all device conflicts, (BIOS, NT, other), are resolved; and that you want to use the phone line soon. Otherwise, (happy malfunctioning :>,) smile just because we can ...

It does list NT 4.0 in the system requirements. I am able to use hyperterminal to get onto the PBX and I can do programming but when I go to close it down is when the computer locks up. Thanks for your help.
