Log In Failure After a Virus

by ben348 . Updated 18 years, 1 month ago

I’m working on an older tablet / laptop. The owner got a virus so he restored the registry from “windows\repair” and virus scanned with BartPE. He deleted all infected files. Afterwards, Windows gave “missing file” errors and wouldn’t load. System32 was nearly empty so I used BartPE to copy most of the files from a fresh XP install. Now I see the login screen and it accepts a password, then kicks me back to the login screen with an error code about activation. (Sorry to say I forgot to write down the number)
He has a license key for XP tablet edition but no CD. Can I use a XP Pro or XP Home CD to do a repair install or will it reject the license key? Any other ideas?
Sorry for the long question. Cheers.
