By bluelaz ·
Attempted to manually uninstall Norton Internet Security...and Nero...both included Registry deletions. Now, can boot C Drive, but only get symbols ?<?(.?). Can boot "Normal" - but will not boot from XP CD, no LKGC, Safe with Command...OWWWW!

What do you mean you can boot "normal". You can get to the xp desktop normally? If you can, and your manual uinstall was just deleting the directories can you restore them and use the uninstaller provided?

Otherwise you might need to wipe the partitions with fdisk and do the old xp reistall.

Cheers.

"Normal" meaning from hard drive. It will not boot from XP CD to do a Repair or Install. "WINDOWS" page comes-up readable, but Log-In - can't do a thing. What is an "fdisk"?

And thank you for replying so quickly!

Hi

If you can actually boot XP, why not use System Restore to restore your operating system to an earlier state - i.e. before you manually uninstalled the programs?

You can do this by clicking Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore and use the calendar to restore the OS.

Next time you attempt to edit the registry you should make a back-up of it by exporting the entire registry to the C:\Windows folder. If everything goes pear-shaped, you simply double click the .reg file to restore your registry.

Also, why did you decide to manually uninstall Norton Internet Security? This program integrates very closely with the operating system. Uninstalling it manually is a big decision!

Good luck
