    Locked

    by raykkho ·

Wonder how I can logon to my company’s NT domain from home. I use broadband and can’t figure out how to logon when connection can only be established when Windows has loaded.

You may want to discuss with your local helpdesk and/or network administration as to whether or not they have implemented a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

VPN software (required on server(s) and client(s)) support broadband connections.

Probably did not get my point, I want to find out how to log on before a connection is established, ie, before any connection is established, sort of chicken and egg scenario?! What to do first, just like to know what people are doing from home without a permanent connection to log on a domain.

VPN is the answer. Just create a new connection in Dialup networking and use your cable connection instead of dialup to make the connection. Basically you will need your IP address, domain name and password. Of course your IS department must supportVPN for it to work.

When you intend to logon to your company’s domain, you need to press escape at the windows logon. You “login” to your server then input the username, password and domain.

Depending on your company’s firewall, I have done it this way:

Set up your home PC with the same WINS and DNS settings as the computers at work, and make it a member of a workgroup with the same name as the NT domain.

Once you establish your connection, you can connect to shares using the UNC (\\server\share) and/or the e-mail the way you would from work. Your home computer will act like it’s a domain member, and simply ask for a username and password when you connect to the share or e-mail.

      Good fortune,
      Don

Configuring a Windows 2000 VPN Server:

REMOVE SPACES from the pasted URL
