Log on to Domain over PIX Firewall

By benchin ·
I am currently figurin gout why Win9x clients(private network)cannot log on to a Win2K PDC(outside network) over a firewall? For trial purposes, i hav opened all tcp as well as udp ports so that nothing gets blocked. Also i noticed WinXP and Win2K clients can get log on just by pointing the DNS to the Win2K server for resolution. What did i miss out?

Make sure you can ping from outside, any server on the inside. If a ping is successful, then you are in the network.

Resolution on the Win9x clients takes place from LMHOSTS... did you setup LMHOSTS on these external clients machines with theserver name and ip addresses?

This sounds like a name resolution problem. Your W98 clients tries to discover the DC by broadcast, but doesnt get an answer because the server is in another subnet. Try to configure a LMHOSTS file for your clients. In the \%systemroot% catalog you will find a LMHOSTS.SAM file. Open this in notepad and fill in the IP and domain name for your server according to the example (no comment # at the beginning of this line). Save the result as LMHOSTS (NB- no file extension!) in the same directoryand reboot the machine. The client should now be able to establish a connection to the DC and log on to the domain.
