Logging active users' time and location

By tech ·
I've recently taken over as Network Manager in a school blessed with a NetWare 4.11 system.

In my old NT4-based job I had a Q&amp solution to tracking who was on what w/station: scheduled a .CMD file that ran the 'net session' command every 20 min.s (or as needed) and appended the outcome to a log file.
Very successful and non-resource gobbling solution.

How can I do that under NetWare? Anyone got a hint? Or know of any 3rd party stuff that will do this and allow its output to be filed?
(I know about NLIST USER etc. It's output doesn't differentiate between w/stations that have live users and those that are now logged out or give info about when the users logged in and out.)

Try ManageWise or ZenWorks (Desktop/Server) Editions.

did not address the question, especially the part about needing the output to be filed and usable later

Well, NLIST USER /A only shows the ones currently logged in.
What you could do is set a few DOS variables in the login script (DOS SET Userobject=%CN for example, to put the common name of a user-object in the Userobject variable), and use those inthe end to add to a textfile, some sort of a login-log. For a list of variables you can use, look for the appnotes of July 1994 on Novell's web, for example, or look for "login script identifier" or "login script variable" on support.novell.com, for a complete list.

I know it doesn't give you who logged out on a certain time, but at least you have an overview of who logged in at what time. And maybe you can retrieve some info from the machine (like its name) this way too.

Hey, Netware has that facility built right in. Just turn on the Netware's accounting, please note that it does use a little bit more resources and SYS should have lots of space (min 3/4 gig extra to store the logs safely). Also note I have not seen a way to automate the deletion of old logs short of a custom automation utility.

This utility allows you to track alot more than just who logged in where, you might find those extra records extreemly valuable. Its all there as part of Netware 4 .

If you don't want enable this feature I would assume you could build a utility that could append to a file the login name, the workstations mac address (nic hardware address) and the current time stamp. Those three variables are currently available under netware.
