Logging startup/shutdown/crashes

By NateH ·
Hi all,

Running Win2000/3 Servers.

I was wondering how to tell if the server crashed or shutdown and when it rebooted or was restarted. I have been looking through the logs, but doesn't seem to be any clear indication of a system starting or shutting down.

I would think this is a basic piece of logging information but can't seem to find out how to see this.

Am I missing something or is there a way to turn on this piece of information?

thanks

Nate

In the Event Viewer System log, look for something like this:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was
0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0xbd67b44b, 0x00000000, 0x0000120). Microsoft Windows
2000 (v15.2195). A dump was saved in C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini051904-01.dmp

A bugcheck is the normal message generated when a Windows system reboots itself. IF the OS was able it, it would make a minidump file that contains info that can be analyzied.
I forget the Event ID # of a bugcheck, unfortunately.
But, look for something like this.
Plus, right after a bugcheck message, you should have messages about the Event Viewer restarting; those are good for also listing the restart times.
