I am have a Windows 98 / 2nd Edition computer that starts up without requiring a login. As a result cannot access and network resources (Windows 98 network). If I do Start/Logoff Windows restarts (not the computer only Windows) and presents a login screen and requires a login.
How can I force the login in screen when the computer restarts (either a cold boot or reset)?

Sounds like you have the family login set instead of Client for MS windows. Trying chaing that in the network applet in the control panel.

Right Click on Network Neighboorhood. Goto Properties and Select Primary Netowk Logon as Your Network Type - Novell or NT. If its NT you will also have to add your Domain name and select the logon check mark.

This is the most probable solution:

Delete the following entry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net registry key:
AutoLogon=<x>

If that doesn't work, there are several other possibilities described in this Microsoft Knowledgebase article:

Open the Control Panel,choose Passwords,click the User Profiles tab,select the appropiate button
Now click the Passwords tab,select the boxes that apply.
One other option is to Open Client for Microsoft Networks Properties dialogue box and select the secod button on General tab,look at the network logon options.Access through network neighborhood.

It sounds like your Network settings are not completely setup. Right Click on the 'Network Neighborhood' icon and select 'Properties' or goto the control panel 'Network' icon. You didn't say if you were logging on to a peer-to-peer network or domain; but you should have:

Client -- Client for Microsoft network
Protocol -- TCP/IP and NetBEUI
File & Print Sharing
Primary Network Logon: Client for Micro

Double click on Client for Micro; Logon Validation; select the logon box and enter the domain; Network Logon Option -- Quick

This will require a logon screen every time you turn on the computer, reboot, logon as different user.
