Logon fails once then works...

By suitcase7 ·
Win95b workstation on a MS Small Business Server network. The log on times out, then you click ok and just hit enter and the log on works just fine. So the end user buys a win98se lic and I upgrade him and the problem is still persisting. So I uninstall/reinstall his networking. No fix. I swap the NIC, no fix. I set up his WINS to point to the server, no fix... I'm grasping at straws now ready to sacrifice a chicken if I have to, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got a rhode island red you can use :) No wait...better not..the aspca will probobly jump all over us :)

Anyhow, This truely sounds strange. I'd try to setup a hosts file and also adding in a domain suffix search order. Maybe try setting the computer up and a different location, just to see if there's a router between you and server on tha particular port. I've seen things like this just from a cable that we crimped so changing that may not be a bad idea either.

Good luck to you

Mark

I have to make the assumption that you use DHCP for clients IP.
SBS does not properly set up Wins and DHCP. You have to add options 44 (NBNS Servers) point to IP of server and option 46 (node type) to 0x8 (hybrid) into the DHCP Server.
You can confirm this with winipcfg or ipconfig/all from a DOS prompt on the client.
Node type should report as Hybrid.
SBS also needs to point at its own Wins Server in TCP/IP properties of SBS.
Greater detail can be found in q192789 at support.microsoft.com
