Logon server

By talexander ·
Recently a BDC was promoted to the PDC and all previous login scripts were moved to the PDC, but some clients still are looking to the BDC (old PDC) for their login scripts which were moved.

I have changed the Volatile Environment setting on the affected clients to show the new PDC, but after changing and restarting the value has changed back to its original setting. How can I make it permanent and how do I force the clients to look at the PDC?

The better questions is why would you want to force them to the PDC?

The idea of a BDC is to also autheniticate users and give them their login information or running of scripts.

I realize I can have scripts on both the PDC and BDC, but it means I have administer both or replicate and it is preferable to do neither and have the scripts on one server only.

The problem you have that when a user logons on to the domain he/she can hit either domain controller.

You should have a copy of the logon scripts in the NETLOGON share on both servers.

I would also ask 2 futher questions.

1) Do you only have 2 domain controllers?

2) Do the scripts change regularly?

If you only have the 2 DC's then copying the files over is a simple task, and if you have more than this then i would script it. You can do this using a ultility called robocopy.

If the scripts change regularly then I would definately set up a copying script and schedule it to run on a daily basis. This seems to be a lot more effective than trying to use NT file replication service.

Any questions give me a shout.
