Long file names

By BarryVG ·
I know this may seem old, but I've got a 3.12 system which is still running fine. Only use for print server and file storage. Redid the package to install larger drives and need to add long file name option. But can't find the answer in my books.Anyone have the command line strings to install long file names. I know there is one for MAC and one for OS2. Appreciate any assistance possible.

3.12 is differnent from 4x and higher.
You will need: nam312.exe

Files Included Size Date Time

..\
NAM312.TXT (This file)
MAC.NAM 15134 7-29-96 7:35:54 pm
OS2.NAM 16855 7-29-96 7:54:20 pm
V_MAC.NLM 5153 9-26-95 5:02:30 pm

Installation Instructions:

1) Backup all volumes, verify the backup.

2) Update the following files in the SYS:SYSTEM directory:
MAC.NAM
OS2.NAM

3) Update the following files in the server's DOS boot directory:
MAC.NAM
OS2.NAM
This can be done either by using the "Transfer Files" option in Rconsole, or
by downing the server and copying the files.

4) At this point it is possible, although not recommended, to avoid
re-creating the volumes. This can be done by restarting the server to load the
new name spaces and trying to mount the volumes. If the volumes will not
mount, then load and run VREPAIR, with the inclosed v_mac.nlm, on all volumes
with mac name space. If the volumes still can not be mounted it is necessary
to recreate the volumes.

5) Delete the affected volumes.

6) Down and restart the file server to load the new *.NAM modules.

7) Create the volumes and add the appropriate name spaces.

Restore the data to the volumes.

Edit the startup.ncf file:

LOAD OS2
ADD NAME SPACE OS2 <volumename>

It should go between the patches being loaded and the disk controller drivers

I'm pretty sure there is no ADD NAME SPACE LONG, for netware 3.12. In order to use the long name you should use the one for OS2. LONG.NAM was added in Netware 4.1 or 4.11.

There was also a problem with earlier versions of the OS2.NAM saving theDOS names in 8.2 format instead of 8.3 format.

If this is the case you will need to patch it.

Cheers

Yes, 3.12 has the capacity to do long file names. It was on the original setup with IDE drives, but when I added new scsi's, I had forgotten the sequence. Did this and the system is capable of storing those long names again.
