I recently added an old NT4 workstation with Word97 to our LAN. The server runs Netware 4.10 and exports two long name space volumes. Writing long files names documents with Word97 onto the volume is refused. Only 8.3 names are allowed. It is systematic. I have upgraded Novell client software from 4.83 sp2 to the latest 4.9 without success. I observe that Excel97 can write long file names on the volume in the same directory!
I have upgraded all the windows 2000 workstations with Client version 4.9 and since then I have observed once the same Word97 error message : this is not a name following the 8.3 naming convention. Here, the problem is sporadic.
CONTEXT: The server runs silently since a long time. I observed a lack of space on volumes causing file decompression failure last month. (55MB free) It has been solved. I have Vrepaired and found a couple of phantom files to repair. I have DSrepaired with no problem found. Patch level is 410PT8a. OS2.NAM is version 4.10.06 oct 23, 1997.
Who has observed this problem? Is it caused by NT4, Word97, OS.NAM, Client 4.9 ? What can I do ?
