Long Pathnames

By PeterSS ·
Has anyone else had problems with very long pathnames on file shares? We have teams of users who have a very involved and detailed directory structure for their filing, that the pathname ends up over the 255-character limitation of Windows. This then creates problems in accessing the files, and in backing them up.

We now have custom program that identifies these files, so that we can exclude them from the backup process; and so that we can notify the owners, but it is a tedious task.

Files and directories aren't always created with long names - it can happen when a directory branch is "dragged and dropped" further down the directory tree.

What can we do? We have tried communicating, but the users aren't IT experts, so don't always understand the implications of long path names.
