Long Term Growth vs Job Satisfaction

By frostbite ·
First of all, I have to apologize for the lengthy post.

I am an experienced Analyst/Programmer reaching almost 10 years of experience. I probably have at least 25 more years to work.

I originally came from a high profile company (Fortune 100s), great long term growth (technical and soft skills wise), good pay, structured environment but long hours (standard IT).

I moved into the Not for profit sector where although there is good pay and a great working environment, I see little chance for long term growth in developing technical skillsets. In fact the technology we are using is a downgrade to what I used to handle.

I am now on my one-year mark so I decided to market test my skills. I was a bit discouraged that my foray in this new sector is not helping my marketability.

Given the same situation where you would be faced with job satisfaction but limited long term growth. Would you stick with your current position and explore other areas of growth or would you go back to the private sector?
