Looking for a FREE backup program...

By BorgInva ·
I am looking for a FREE to download backup program that uses a GUI interface. I need a good one. A working one. I currently use XXCOPY but it is too complicated with all those switches and it never works for me, especially when copying to a CD. I have used dozens: Cobal, MOB, too many to list. Some programs do one thing I need while others do another. What I need is this from one program:

*GUI interface
*Compatible with Win9x, 2000, XP
*Able to select folders and files to backup
*Able to create sets of multiple entries to backup
*Able to create groups to run multiple sets.
*Able to choose from copy all and incremental.
*Able to choose to delete files/folders in destination that are no longer in source.
*Able to copy/overwrite files/folders regardless of attributes
*Can write to a CD-RW when the CD is a drive letter using DirectCD or similar.
*Must copy files, with option to compress them. What is the point to access a file from a zipped backup when you are stuck ina non-bootable Windows system when you need that copy of USER.DAT?
*An option to compress files or just copy them, and when it copies, it copies to the directory specified, not to a directory called (for example): d:\c\dir\docs when the correct directory is d:\docs.

So, what programs do you recommend I try? Either point me the way or send it my way. I will try anything if I have not already done so.

Since you want it to be compatible with 9x, 2000 and XP you left out backing up other clients from the backup server. You ask a lot of free software.

I am not concerned with bakcing up from other servers. Just locally.

Good luck. If you find something that does all this for FREE, let the rest of us know.

The only "free" backup is the one that comes with the OS (NTBACKUP.EXE in win2000/XP maybe MSBACKUP.EXE in Win9x ??? ).

Unfortunately, you cannot use ntbackup to backup to an external or internal CDR or CDRW writer directly. Please see MSKB Q320471 for more info. The work-around they recommend is to use NTBACKUP.EXE to store a backup file to your local hard disk drive, then to use the burning software to burn the local backup file onto a cd.

The backup programs that comes with WIndows only compresses the backup. It does not copy.

Unfortunately, it is a 30 day trial, and a product to buy. I am looking for a freebie.
