OK. I’m pretty sure it was on Tech Republic, and seems it was last fall (2006). An article about software/scripts/utilities that allowed remote administrators to run scripts and such on remote hosts. The author mentioned the information he was providing *could* be used for malicious purposes, but was intended for admins. I think it was a “10 ways to hack Windows” type of article. I know this is vague, but such is my memory. Anyone remember this, or know where I can get it?
My legitimate use is this:
We are a library system and take care of PCs in our client (remote) libraries. Some of the PCs are used by the public for internet access and more. As such, we have used a product to “lock down” the machines so that changes made to them by our patrons are lost when the PC is rebooted, and the machines return to their previous configuration.
Using other features of the lock down product, we can remotely, and without our intervention, schedule the software to unlock the machines at night to allow antivirus definition updates to take place. We would also like to schedule Windows updates to happen at the same time, but because the updates require an administrative login on re-boot to finish, it won’t work.
If my memory serves me, the article contained info that could help solve this for us.
Anyone remember the article? Or have info on any utilities that would help login remotely and automatically.
Thanks,
Mike
