Looking for automated inventory software

By JeffL ·
My company has a new IT manager who thinks we would be better off with an automated system to track all of the hardware and software across our network. I am currently looking at Tivoli, Track-it!, and ZAC but I haven't found exactly what we need.
We want software that will look at all files and software on each PC. We want to be able to search for files by type (.mp3, .jpg, etc.) We also need it to look at versions of Windows and Office and be able to give us a report as to how many licenses we have used. Remote administration and file update would also be a plus.
Someone mentioned to me that they used to use a suite from Intel but I cannot find any information on the internet about it.
Any information about the Intel suite, the software listed above, any other software that fits the bill, or reviews/comparisons needed!

We use SMS v2.0 in our operation and it has all the capabilities you mentioned. Configuration and setup are not trivial but once it's up and running, it's a sweet deal.
Y2K assessments using SMS were easy to accomplish and Microsoft even supplied the software database for all their products so non-compliant products could be easily identified without human sorting.

You can find information on the Intel product at

regards!

SMS 2.0 for NT works great for NT based systems.

However if you don't need anything but inventory, a program called WRQ Express will provide inventory for systems running either Novell or NT.

We use Track It! Unfortunately you can only audit for executables for Licensing purposes. It works great for us though. The reports for softwar elicensing are great and can be easily customized using Crystal reports. I even have this thing printreports with IP's and Macs for for tracking down conflicts.

We have not found a need to search for other files. If you end up with WinAmp or Music Match on the audited software list then you can pretty much bet they have some MP3z on thier system.
