Loosing printers on a W2k network

I have users on a network that is running W2k, server and workstations SP2. There are 3 printers avaliable on the network. An HP 650 plotter with a static IP running off HP Jetdirect admin on a NT server an HP 5L and HP 952 connected to a lynksys print server. I have one user who looses printer conectivity every few days. Doesn’t seem to matter weather the WS is left on or turned off. The only work around is to search for computers on the network, discover the NT box, and install the printer or plotter from there as administrator.

There is alot that I would like to look at to determine the cause, but I would probably start with the workgroup. It sounds like maybe the pc with the prob, may not been in the same workgroup. Thus causing you to have to search for the printers as opposed to them being listed in the my network places.

Again this is the first place i would check. next i would insure that the printers were installed properly. there are shortcuts to installing printers, but in the 2k/xp os you must follow certain protocols to ensure the printer will opporate without problems. This is different for each type of printer and for each type of os.

Next I would try to map a network drive to the print server itself (making sure to “reconnect at logon” and theninstall the printer through the mapped drive.

There are several different ways to ts this problem, let me know if any of these help, I will investigate more myself.

A trick used here: install the printers on the server and share from there. No more workgroup trouble!
Map it through the server instead of directly.
