Lose network connection

By adembo ·
Probably at least once or twice a day I lose all network connectivity at my workstation. I am on a network with 300 other people, all of whom have no problems. The connection usually fixes itself after about 5 or 10 minutes. I have replaced the NIC card multiple times, I tried plugging into a hub with a neighbor, I took myself out of the domain and re-added myself again and again. Does anyone have any ideas why, without warning, I lose connectivity.

Sounds like you traced back from your workstation to the patch panel and when you connected to a port on a neighbor's hub, you still had the same problem? If yes, then your system may have some problems. If no, then try placing your computer at an entirely different port and see if the problem follows the computer (if the problem does not occur after moving the computer, then you have a cabling or port issue at the patch panel).

When/if you narrow the problem down to your computer (if you have other computers configured with the same hardware), you might try swapping hdd's to determine whether the problem follows the software settings.

To me, it sounds like you have a computer issue. But there's not enough written to determinewhether it's software configuration or hardware. It can be a bad power supply or the systemboard as well.

Windows NT is the operating system, This just started happening a couple of weeks ago. Nothing was changed as far as I know. TCP/IP, IP address is by DHCP, has the same DNS and WINS as the other computers on the network.

There is a myrid of possible problems and answers here. Some things to check are: 1). Check the cabling scheme and make sure it meets standards. The reason for this should be obvious, some cabling schemes will support a low grade connection for onlyso long before a true high speed connection drops out (loses sync). 2).Another thing to check is the PCI/ISA slot in which your placing you NIC card (or one of the new CNR risers); you can do this simply by placing the NIC card in another slot of type. 3). Check with your Tech Support Rep and/or System Administrator and have them ready to run a tracrt the moment you get a "drop out". Your problem may be a bad port on a hub or router blade. If you still have problems, let me know and I will suggest a few other things.

If you have manageable switches/hubs, you can try secure yourself a free port on them and connect your system to this port. Telnet into the management node and monitor from a different system. There should be some indication when you got dropped.I would also recommend that you set your NIC to 10 Mb/half duplex just to test if it stabilizes. Your hub may not be able to support 100 Mb. If that fails, swap your cables/patch point with your neighbour and see if his system is stable at 100/full
A remote possibility is that you are being win-nuked by your collegues. J/K, but patching is also a good idea.
