Is this a sound card, or a codec based on-board sound system?

For either, start with the latest driver from the manufacture.

If this is an older sound card, and / or the manufacture does not offer a XP driver for the card, you may need a new sound card.

Especially if you have on-board sound and / or video, 128MB of RAM is on the low side for XP.
Additional RAM may take care of the problem.
